Story #10 (Aug. 21)

Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Finally, Carol and I are able to take our 50th Anniversary trip we planned back in 2020. We are in the Upper Peninsula (U.P.) of Michigan traveling to various major cities moving from east to west spending a Day here and up to Three days there. Right now, we are in the Houghton/Hancock area on the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Carol has never been up here before and I was last here when I was about 7 or 8. So far, the trip has been great with the weather being in the 70's and 80's and no rain.

The biggest issue that we've had is eating out at restaurants. There are not that many around here that are not Fast Food and to find one that serves breakfast is like finding a needle in a haystack. I will say, there a lot of Dollar Generals though. On our first day in the U.P., we discovered that the restaurants have the same problem that we have at home, NO Waitresses. We went to a Mexican restaurant and saw that everyone seated had no food and half still were looking at Menus. Slow Service for sure, so we left.

We found a large Supermarket where we figured we could get some food from the Deli to take back to our room and as I was dropping Carol off at the door, I noticed a Shell station next door with the price at $3.07 per gallon. A Great Deal considering gas prices up here are ranging from $3.29 to $3.49. I told her that we can't pass up that deal, I would fill up the car and come back and find her.

I pulled up to the pump and put in my card and the stupid machine wouldn't accept it. Cancelled that transaction and started over, same thing. Irritated, I cancelled that transaction and moved my car to another pump. And again, it would not recognize my card. Really steamed now, I went to the cashier window and read the sign "Gone to Lunch, be back in an Hour". I really didn't want to miss out on the low price of gas, so I thought I would try another credit card. I opened my wallet and looked at my cards where I noticed that I was using my Hotel Key Card and not my credit card.
